Urban Forestry Technologist

SUMMARY
Reporting to the Urban Forestry Manager, the incumbent is responsible for maintaining and protecting Dieppe’s urban forest. The role involves coordinating the protection and planting of trees on public and private land, providing guidance to applicants regarding the process, validating tree study information and ensuring compliance with the conditions of the certificate of authorization.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participate in the development of the urban forestry management plan
- Process applications for certificates of authorization required by the tree bylaw
- Maintain and improve tree-planting programs
- Develop and maintain a forest maintenance program (pruning, formative pruning, fertilization, etc.)
- Monitor and control insect-borne diseases
- Develop, implement and maintain urban forestry policies and procedures
- Raise public awareness of tree conservation on an ongoing basis
- Participate in the planning and implementation of forestry projects and coordinate related activities
- Take inventory data on trees and stands and map them using Geographic Information System (GIS) software
- Keep the inventory and database of public and private trees up to date
- Ensure compliance with the tree bylaw, municipal policies and procedures
- Conduct general maintenance of equipment and tools
- Ensure the safety of staff and the public in the working environment
- Work with the Operations Department to respond to forestry-related requests
- Supervise the work of staff, students and service providers
- Perform all other tasks and responsibilities related to work plans
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education
- Post-secondary diploma in forestry
Certification
- WorkSafeNB and first aid certification (or to be obtained within one year of hire)
- International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist credential (or to be obtained within one year of hire)
- New Brunswick Forest Technicians Association membership (asset)
Driver’s license
- Class 5
Experience
- Two years’ experience in urban forestry
Skills and abilities
- Fluent spoken and written French and English
- Extensive knowledge of Microsoft 365 (Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and ArcGIS
- Ability to work unsupervised, independently and as part of a team
- Initiative, discernment and ability to prioritize
- Ability to work with the public
- Ability to plan, analyze logically, problem-solve, make sound decisions and assess risks
- Ability to organize, manage time and monitor priorities
- Motivation, sense of responsibility and flexibility
- Ability to operate equipment and tools
- Positive attitude with respect to the municipality’s and community’s interests
- Ability to perform the manual tasks required
- Physical ability to perform assigned work

WORK SCHEDULE
- Forty hours a week
SALARY
- As per CUPE Local 4679 collective agreement
